Some questions about Claddagh rings...?

I have a Claddagh ringn it have an emerald set in the heart. It was my great great grandmothers. She came over from Ireland. Apperantly these have become all the rage among some of the girls at my school. I've been wearing mine off and on for a while now. But some of these girls don;t believe its as old as it is. What should I do?
Also, I would like to find and authentic one from Ireland that has my birthstone (amathyst) set in the heart. Where could I find one like that? Also, have you ever used a Claddagh ring as your engagement/wedding ring?
